Hebrews 13:9 (NIV)

Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so.

This is an amazing verse. Let’s delve into it.

We live in times when there is a great influx of teachings that seems to be right but is against the scriptures. The writer of Hebrews writes a command here. That is, “Don’t be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.”

Few years ago, I attended an all-night prayer along with my cousin. After we reached the venue, we felt so uncomfortable that we walked out. I have attended many prayer meetings but this service was one of a kind. This service involved laughing spirits, and a strange prophetic movement that is not based on scripture.

You might have faced such situations and might have felt uncomfortable just as I was..

There are many such movements but I’m going to talk only on two such movements.

Here’s my take on that… I might receive a lot of heat for saying this…but here’s the truth.

  1. Prophetic Movement.
  2. Laughing spirits.

Prophetic movement

I believe in prophecy. I have heard prophecies in my own life and I see it coming true and working. I believe in prophecy. But I am skeptical about prophecies that I see in the world today.

Here’s what happens, A new believer joins a group of people. He getssaved, transformed and starts witnessing God’s work in his life. He watches people around him prophesying and doing wonders. All of a sudden he starts walking around prophesying to people.

What really happens is this, new believers see others prophesying and they prophesy. A friend of mine asked another friend, who usually prophesies, asking him how he receives the word from God to prophesy. He said this, “I look at person for few minutes and I start to receive the word of Prophecy and I speak those words to them” Sounds great right?!. When you look at a person, you see their emotions and can figure out what if there is something wrong in them. The moment you see such a person; your mind can also supply words of prophecy with a mix of prophecies that you had spoken several times to several other people.

This cannot be taken as prophecy.! Why? Because such prophetical words takes it origin in your mind, in the flesh and is not from the spirit of God. Any such prophecies cannot be accepted as the right one. I have seen this in reality, many such words of prophecy that he spoken were not right.

Imagine, If a new born child who after a year has just begun to walk now all of a sudden starts to run around and acts like adults. If you were to see such a child then you will know that it is something wrong. It’s not normal for them to be that way.

God calls people to be prophets but before he puts the words into them. He shapes them and forms their character completely so that they learn to discern and listen clearly to the voice of God and speak words of prophecy with boldness and clarity. You can see that in the life of Isaiah; He was bold and strong in his in his prophetical ministry. Prophets are normal people and not supernatural people. Any prophetical word that comes, there’s is clarity and boldness as they prophesy. It is guided by the spirit and not the flesh. It does not come with a pushy spirit but comes with power of God that as they speak the holy spirit starts working the life of people who hear it.

It’s important to understand; when God calls he prepares. He knows the time we have speak words of prophecy and he will put those words in our mouth. Otherwise if we desire to speak words of prophesy just as othersdo then our mind can also supply such words of prophecy.!

If you receive a prophetical word, check its origin. If it’s in the flesh don’t speak. If it’s from the spirit of God speak it with confidence.

Laughing spirit

It is shocking to me that nowhere does the bible talk about people who laughed in the spirit. I wonder why Peter, Paul, Silas, Timothy, John and so many never even spoke about it. Why is that so?

Some might say, take this verse, to support the laughing spirit, that Jesus said, “If you believe in me you will do greater things than I did.” John 14:12

Well, that does not establish the spirit of laughing. That means the signs and wonders will follow when we believe and put our faith and trust in him.

I wonder why Jesus never had “laughing in the spirit session with his disciples every night.” It’s something to think about.! Why is that never mentioned in the bible ?

Let me say out of my experience, When I pray and seek the presence of God. I feel a fire that comes on me, immediately a peace that rests in my heart and there is a smile that comes on my face. God puts that joy in my hearts and makes me rejoice in his presence. There’s biblical evidence for that.

Psalms 16:11, You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

That’s the joy we receive. The bible does not talk about laughing in his presence.

Let me conclude this by going back the verse.

The Message Version says it this way,

Don’t be lured away from him by the latest speculations about him. The grace of Christ is the only good ground for life. Products named after christ don’t seem to do much for those who buy them.

We live in times when such acts of prophetical movement and laughing spirits are given more importance than the grace of God itself. If there’s anything that saves us and makes us holy and pleasing to God; that is only the Grace of God and nothing else.

Ephesians 2:8, We are saved by grace.

My friend and I had a long conversation tonight. As we shared our life stories of how God has saved us and is using us for his glory. One thing that stood out was, “The Grace of God”, we don’t deserve the life we have but because of His Grace we have this life. I think that should be the driving force of our hearts.

I want you to understand this, if you want to grow in God, meditate on his grace and mercies every day, that will keep you grounded and dependent on him. Place your priority on understanding the wonder of the grace of God than on the spiritual gifts. And when you do you will receive the spiritual gifts along with it.

Let your heart be strengthened only with the grace and not with anything else.
